Multiple Amps & Speaker Volume Controls

I was thinking of adding a Dayton TS-4VC 2-Source 4-Zone Volume Control to three sets of Altec speakers, all 8 ohms. This would allow me to use two different amps (one from a receiver, the other from an electronic pipe organ). The plan is to select one of the two amps to power the 3 sets of speakers and to be able to adjust the volume of the 3 sets independently.

Is this a particularly dangerous thing to do?
Precautions?
Any other suggestions (layouts or brand names)?

I looked at the cat page. It sounds like what you need. Do not expect to get the same power as a direct connection. For back ground or lower listening levels it should be OK. If you get this device let us know how well it works.
